9 Weirdest Ways People Have Played Dark Souls

Praise the Drums!

Dark Souls is a notoriously challenging game, but when you've played it over and over again, overcoming even its hardest obstacles becomes second nature. To raise the difficulty even higher and really put their skills to the test, the talented players featured below have decided to get downright ridiculous. Not by finishing the game at SL1, or speed running, or even attempting NG+7 while permanently Gravelorded. These folks have gone all in, using increasingly hilarious control schemes - from voice commands to a Rock Band guitar - to not only play Dark Souls, but beat it.

Check out the full list below or watch the video up top for a few of our favorites.

Rock Band Guitar - Bearzly

According to a Reddit AMA hosted by Bearzly, this Rock Band guitar run (one of his most iconic) took him 11.25 hours to complete. He names Ornstein and Smough the hardest boss fight using this method and Sen's Fortress the hardest area. You can watch the Ornstein and Smough boss fight above and also check out the diagram below, which shows how exactly Bearzly controlled his Dark Souls character using the guitar. This diagram, provided by Bearzly, shows how he mapped Dark Souls controls to a Rock Band guitar.

Bearzly also used the same method to play Bloodborne. You can watch a video of him beating the final boss of the Bloodborne DLC on his Twitch channel.

Racing Wheel - Bearzly

Dark Souls streamer Benjamin "Bearzly" Gwin is one of the best Dark Souls players out there and one of the most creative when it comes to finding weird ways to play.

His steering wheel controller run is definitely one of the more absurd and impressive methods he's attempted. Watching him literally drive his character past the Anor Londo archers is enough to make any struggling player want to give up entirely.

Upside Down - LobosJr

Dark Souls streamer LobosJr may not go the weird controller route for his challenge runs, but he's still one of the best players out there, constantly exploring new and ridiculous ways to make Dark Souls even harder. He's beaten the game with one health, no shield, using only sorceries, permanently Gravelorded, with an aggression mod – all at the same time.

For this list, we chose to focus mainly on challenges that were more physical, so here's LobosJr beating Dark Souls upside down. Another favorite from LobosJr is his Limbo mod run, where he's applied the Dark Souls Limbo mod to turn Lordran into a textureless greyscale world with no HUD.

Mouse Only - Bearzly

Playing Dark Souls with a keyboard and mouse is frustrating enough. Bearzly managed to beat it using only a mouse.

Voice Commands - Bearzly

Frustrated Dark Souls players may spend a lot of time yelling things at the screen, but Bearzly's voice command-driven run of Dark Souls actually puts those exclamations to good use. His Voice Souls run, as he calls it, uses a program called VoiceAttack to interpret voice commands into keyboard input, allowing him to dictate moves via microphone. This wasn't easy according to Bearzly, especially with a 1.5 second delay, but the finished run does make for some hilarious and impressive viewing.

This one took 30 hours and 485 deaths.

Rock Band Drums - Bearzly

Bearzly hasn't only beaten Dark Souls with a Rock Band guitar – he's done it with the drum set, too.

Twitch Plays Dark Souls

The phenomenon of Twitch Plays took off in 2014, when an anonymous programmer developed a script to translate chat commands into button input and used it to "crowdplay" Pokémon Red on Twitch. Other coders caught on, developing their own scripts to work with their favorite games.

Twitch Plays Dark Souls was inevitable. It was also a mess when it began. Users spammed the Twitch chat with deliberately counter-productive commands and progress seemed impossible. Eventually, the coder added in a voting system and a delay, freezing the game until chat users input and voted on the desired command. It was a long and hard way to play, but Dark Souls fans with a lot of time on their hands managed to band together and beat it using nothing but a chatroom and their knowledge of Dark Souls.

It took 1,040 hours and 940 deaths.

One Finger Only - Bearzly

Bearzly's one-finger run of Dark Souls is exactly what it sounds like. He played using only one finger at a time, with an Xbox 360 controller, in what is probably the most physically damaging challenge listed so far.

You can watch him beat Ornstein and Smough with this method on Twitch.

DDR Pad - Bearzly

Bearzly is back with another physically demanding way to play Dark Souls – with a DDR pad. These aren't the only weird ways people have played Dark Souls.
